Western Scotland is a winter climber’s paradise like no other, offering a unique blend of world-renowned venues including Glencoe and Ben Nevis, as well as the surrounding areas. This diverse landscape provides exceptional winter climbing opportunities across all levels of difficulty. At Northwest Mountaineering, we offer guided winter climbing experiences that range from mountaineering routes and Munro summits to Grade V winter climbs.
Glencoe is justifiably famous as one of Scotland’s finest climbing venues, renowned for its stunning scenery and challenging terrain. In winter, it offers a wealth of options—from spectacular ridge traverses like Aonach Eagach (Grade II) and Curved Ridge (Grade II-III) to classic gullies such as Crowberry Gully (Grade IV) and Twisting Gully (Grade III). The rich history and fascinating geology of Glencoe only add to its appeal.
The Lochaber region, which includes Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest mountain and a mecca for Scottish winter climbing, is home to some of the best winter venues in the country. Other highlights include Aonach Mor and the remote climbs within the Grey Corries and Mamores. This part of Scotland boasts an incredible diversity of climbing packed into a small area, making Fort William the undisputed outdoor capital of the United Kingdom. Our guided winter climbing courses provide the perfect setting to explore these iconic climbs and immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
We also run guided winter climbing days in the east including areas such as The Cairngorms and Creag Meagaidh.
