Starting at Altnafeadh, you’ll work your way up through the dramatic Crowberry Basin to the summit of Stob Dearg, with options to extend your day if time allows.

Experience Needed

Being a perfect introduction into scrambling we suggest having a good fitness level and a solid head for heights due to some exposed sections. Hillwalking experience is recommended, and while prior scrambling or climbing is a bonus, it’s not essential.

  • Guided Ascent of Curved Ridge

    Experience the excitement of a guided ascent of Curved Ridge, one of Scotland’s most iconic and airy scrambles on the majestic Buachaille Etive Mòr, often called "The Buachaille." This Moderate-grade route is a favorite for individuals seeking an introduction to more challenging scrambling or easy rock climbing. Renowned as one of Scotland’s best mountain routes, Curved Ridge offers stunning views and a true sense of accomplishment from start to finish. With a professional Curved Ridge Guide by your side, this unforgettable adventure in Glen Coe is both safe and rewarding.

  • Your guided day on Curved Ridge begins at Altnafeadh, about a 15 minute drive from the village of Glen Coe, where you’ll meet your experienced North West Mountaineering instructor and go through a safety briefing before setting off on a 45 - 60 minute hike to the base of Buachaille Etive Mòr.

     

    This iconic scramble in Glen Coe starts with a traverse beneath D Gully and leads into the dramatic Crowberry Basin, offering hands-on climbing and incredible views of Rannoch Moor. With your Curved Ridge Guide ensuring your safety and enjoyment, you’ll ascend one of Scotland’s most famous scrambling routes including lots of interesting positions as you scramble your way alongside the huge wall of Rannoch Wall, before working your way towards Crowberry Tower, before reaching the summit of Stob Dearg.

     

    From the Munro summit of Stob Dearg, depending on conditions and time, we can either descend via Coire na Tulaich or extend the day to Stob na Broige, another Munro on the Buachaille Etive Mòr ridge. By the end of the day, we'll return to Altnafeadh, having completed a memorable and rewarding experience on this classic Scottish mountain.

  • Curved Ridge on Buachaille Etive Mor is an iconic mountaineering route that requires good fitness, solid hillwalking experience, and confidence on exposed and technical terrain. With expert coaching from North West Mountaineering guides, you can safely tackle the challenges and enjoy this unforgettable adventure.

  • At Northwest Mountaineering we run our guided ascents of Curved Ridge throughout the year. For rock rather than winter ascents, conditions often allow between April and October.
