This 3-day course is perfect for those with prior experience in winter mountaineering or rock climbing, ready to tackle graded Scottish winter climbs up to Grade II. Based in iconic locations like Glencoe and Ben Nevis near Fort William, participants will learn advanced techniques such as roped ridge and gully climbing, proper use of technical gear (ropes, harnesses, and climbing hardware), and navigation in challenging conditions, including poor visibility.
This course offers hands-on instruction in snow and ice climbing, weather and avalanche assessment, and practical strategies for safe and efficient movement on demanding terrain. With the guidance of experienced and qualified Northwest Mountaineering instructors, you’ll attempt classic Scottish winter routes like Ledge Route on Ben Nevis, Sron na Lairig in Glencoe, or Golden Oldie on Aonoch Mor, gaining the confidence to handle complex winter mountaineering challenges.

Our Advanced Winter Mountaineering Courses maintain a maximum ratio of 1:2. This approach prioritises safety while allowing for personalised instruction on the essential skills needed to stay safe and enjoy the unique challenges of the Scottish winter mountaineering environment.
The Scottish winter can be demanding, particularly when combined with the effort of a strenuous hike to reach higher summits, often carrying a heavy pack from sea level. Therefore, we recommend participants have prior experience with winter mountain walking and be at least 18 years old.
